Teddy’s Lookout

Located behind the town, Teddy’s Lookout offers incredible panoramic views of the Great Ocean Road and the lush coastal landscape. It’s one of Lorne’s top photo spots.

The Hidden Cathedral

Cathedral rock is hidden along the Great Ocean Road. It is easy to drive past the small car park without realising it is there. It’s roughly a 10 minute drive north east of Lorne, and is situated between Aireys Inlet and Lorne. 

Cathedral Rock is more commonly known at Cathedrals and faces ESE toward Bass Straight. Cathedrals is a small Bluff covered in coastal bushland, a small strip of beach and then reef which is exposed on low tide.

Waves or Surfboard Display Rack

The waves at Cathedrals are awesome on its day. Cathedrals catches the swell so when there is no swell at Lorne you may find a wave here.

It’s a right hand Point/Reef Break and works best in SSW swell and NW winds. Best tidal conditions are low to medium on a rising tide.

If there are no waves and you are leaving the board in its surfboard display rack for the day. You may want to check out Aireys Inlet, Lorne, Anglesea or even heading south west Wye River, Skenes Creek or Apollo Bay. Maybe even take a look at some other nearby surf spots like waves along the Fairhaven stretch of beach.

Good Eats

There are many good cafes and restaurants in the towns along the Great Ocean Road such as Lorne and Apollo Bay. So If you are looking for something to eat there’s no shortage of options. We spent the afternoon in Lorne and had some hot chips with the Cockatoos at Captain Hooked fish and chips. The best Fish and Chips along the the Great Ocean Road coast are in Apollo Bay. Check out the Apollo Bay Fishermen’s co-op.

There is lots to do in and around the Cathedrals area if your are surfing or just taking a look around. Even just the drive itself along the Great Ocean Road is enjoyable with some spectacular views of coastline, cliffs and ocean.

Posso’s

Point impossible or Posso’s is a magical spot, it is a small rugged chunk of coastline with beaches extending on both sides. Breamlea Beach on the NE side and point Impossible beach and the SW side. Both are long stretches of open beach with white sand. The mouth of Thompson Creek also opens out to the ocean right beside Posso’s. The Point impossible beach is a nudist beach. If you walk SW you can walk the beach all the way to Torquay or take the surf coast walk trail. This is the first section of the Surf Coast Walk and leads from Point Impossible to Yellow Bluff. Yellow Bluff looks out over Zeally Bay and Fishermans Beach. Point Impossible is Wathaurung land.

Waves

Point Impossible is a right hand reef/point break. There are two waves, insides (first reef) and outsides (Second reef). Posso’s needs larger swells for the swell to reach the point/reef. 

Winter (June-August) is generally the best time for surfing point impossible, as the winter swells are more consistent and powerful.

Best surf condition:

Swell Direction – Best swells come from the southwest

Wind Direction – Offshore winds from the north west create the best surf conditions

Tide – The surf is generally better at low to mid tide

Point impossible can handle a range of wave sizes, but it’s particularly good for small to medium swells, making it suitable for longboarders.

Point Impossible is situated between Torquay and Breamlea and is about a 10 minute drive form Torquay, the point impossible road itself can be very corrugated, but the visit is worth the wear and tear on your car. With it’s sweet right hand reef break, secluded beaches and coastal walks, don’t hesitate to check out Point Impossible.
