Board Rack at Point Addis – a Coastal Treasure

Board Rack & Surf Conditions

This is the Revolute Board Rack at Point Addis. This board rack is beautifully designed and crafted. The Revolute Board Rack is perfect for storing and displaying your favourite board. The rack is made from birchwood ply and is painted in clear varnish, showing off the natural grain of the timber. It is an adjustable board rack.

Point Addis is a surfing gem Nestled between Anglesea and Torquay. The stand is pictured on Addiscot beach, a beautiful part of the world. The beach itself stretches for about 2 kilometers along the coast and at its north east end adjoins Jarosite Headland. Addiscot beach is lined on one side by awesome limestone cliffs and the other by the ocean of Bass Straight. The beach is wide and there are a variety of peaks along its length offering both left and right-hand waves. Best surf conditions are a south to southeast swell combined with an offshore wind direction from the north to northwest and a mid to high tide. The waves get bigger the closer you get to Jarosite headland.

Other Things To Do

If there are no waves and you are leaving your board in its board rack for the day, there are plenty of things to do in and around Point Addis.

Point Addis Marine National Park is perfect for snorkeling and diving. Also Hiking trails wind through the coastal bushlands. The Koorie Cultural Walk is a must-do, providing insights into the rich Aboriginal heritage of the region. There are some amazing views over Addiscot Beach and Bass Strait on this walk. There is also the The Surf Coast Walk, offering a coastal route from Torquay to Anglesea and passing through Point Addis. This trail provides stunning coastal views, opportunities for wildlife spotting, and access to secluded beaches.

In nearby Torquay, the surf capital of Australia, you can visit the Australian National Surfing Museum, check out the surf shops and maybe have a look down Bains Cresent at the surf seconds stores or even just enjoy the vibrant café scene. I would recommend Italo’s for some great wood fired pizza but sadly it burnt down not that long ago, so maybe check out Betty’s Burgers.

The nearby town of Anglesea is a great place to explore, with attractions such as the Anglesea Golf Club, where kangaroos are frequently seen on the fairways. There are Some Good eats down Inverlochy Street at “Poppie’s Anglesea”.

Addiscot Beach and Point Addis.

Point Addis, with its blend of natural beauty, surfing, recreational activities, and cultural significance, offers something for everyone. Point Addis is must-visit destination on Victoria’s coast.

Custom Wooden Surfboard Stand

This Wooden Surfboard Stand was made back in 2005. It’s a purely custom board stand, there are no adjustable points. Unfortunately the surfboard that fitted this stand is long gone. So I can’t show a photo of the stand holding the board it was made for. This stand was early development work for the ‘Revolute’ Board Stand.

The Making of a Wooden Surfboard Stand

This wooden surfboard stand is made out of radiata pine and stained in oak. One of the things that made this stand difficult to build is the number of angles it is made up of. There are roughly 50 separate angles. Some of the angles are for aesthetics and some for practical reasons. The necessary angles are to accommodate the curves of the board and the boards centre of balance when standing up which accounts for the backwards lean on the stand (I figured this angle out by hanging the surfboard from the roof by its nose and measuring the angle of the tail). Making this wooden surfboard stand extremely well balanced. The angles in the feet are mainly just aesthetic design elements.

The arms were made in three sections then glued together with liquid nails, no dowels or nails. The arms are still holding strong after 19 years. On all the other components of the stand I used either screws or nails and glue.

The stand is completely hand made with the exception of a compound mitre saw. This wooden surfboard stand took many hours to make. This is mainly because it had to be custom made to fit the rails and tail of an individual board. So although the stand I believed worked practically and aesthetically it wasn’t something viable to produce on a larger scale.

First Attempt

As a first attempt at a single wooden surfboard stand although it was a success in that it could sturdily hold a board and I believe look good doing so, it needed a lot of refining.

Because this stand didn’t really lend itself to reproduction on a larger scale. I needed something adjustable. I wanted to keep the basic structure and medium of the wooden surfboard stand design as I liked the look of the stand and its functionality was good.

The Solution

Eventually I designed the ‘revolute’ surfboard stand which overcame these issues that I faced and surpassed the original artefact . It is a very practical stand with a sleek curved design that compliments the natural curves of a surfboard, offering a custom feel, almost as if it were tailor-made for each board it holds. It brings a fresh vibe to any room, transforming your surfboard into a piece of art.

Surfboard Stand at Point Lonsdale: Coastal Beauty & Good Waves

I am going to post a series of photos of the Revolute Surfboard Stand at iconic surf spots in Victoria. The first location is Point Lonsdale, it is one of my favourite surf spots and places in general because of its stunning coastal beauty and good waves.

Where is the Revolute Surfboard Stand?

These images of the Revolute Surfboard Stand were taken at Point Lonsdale. This was out on the Point of the coastal reserve looking toward Point Nepean. No waves to speak of today, off the point or in the bay. That aside, it was a beautiful evening watching the sun go down and eating fish and chips. Highly recommend the fish and chips from ‘Lonnie Fish and Chips’.

Walking Trail

Walked a bit of the coastal track through the tea and moonah trees and along the cliff top from the shops to the Rip View lookout. If you refer to the Aerial View below, you can see some of the walking trail. The surfboard stand is in this photo too but it is a bit hard to see.

Things To Do

If you haven’t been to Point Lonsdale it’s worth the trip, it sits at the west side of the mouth of Port Phillip Bay (What is known as The Rip) and is a beautiful little spot. The back beach catches a lot more swell than the front beach but both are good on their day. If there are no waves and you are leaving the board in its surfboard stand, you can always check out the lighthouse or the pier or go for a walk on one of the many walking trails in the area. At the base of the light house are some awesome rock pools. You can swim in some of these pools on low tide.

Point Lonsdale is only a 5 minute drive from Queenscliff where you can catch the ferry to Sorrento, opening up all the wave possibilities that the Mornington Peninsula has to offer. If you are looking for a Surfboard stand please consider visiting the GLYO O shop.

Board Stand – Revolute

Single Surfboard Rack

The Revolute board stand is Patent Pending and the first official product release of GLYD O.

The following is an explanation of the board stand, its features and some history.

How it came about

When I was younger, I got a new surfboard and used to store it in the corner of my room. The room had varnished wooden floorboards. One day the board slipped out from under itself and crashed to the floor. It sparked an idea for wanting to build a board stand. I have revisited the idea many times over the years building various different stands, most of which were impractical in some way or another until now. 

The Board Stand

My hope was that I could design a single board stand that was original and was both aesthetically pleasing and useful. This proved to be extremely challenging.

The name Revolute is in reference to the curved nature of the design. It is a minimal design that is clean and functional.

The Revolute board stand can securely hold any surfboard up to 7ft with the possible exception of some really deep v/swallow tails boards, such as some twin fins. It will also hold kiteboards, wakebaords etc. It is very sturdy and very well crafted. The materials are varnished birch ply, EVA foam (tail and rail protection) and stainless steel (fasteners).

It is adjustable and can be easily configured to suit the width and tail attributes of a board. 

Looking great in any room as a modern piece of furniture it’s also a practical way to store, present and/or organise a board.

The revolute board stand is proudly Australian made.
